The Google Maps Platform, the best demonstration of movement

Google Maps Platform

The human being is a social animal, but also a very dynamic being. We are in constant movement: at home, when we go to work, do sport… even when we sleep! New technologies are here to help us make the right choices and optimise time and distance. The Google Maps Platform tool pursues this goal and provides excellent results.

Google Maps Platform geolocalización

A recent article in this blog already dealt with the importance of geolocation and its interaction with Big Data. Google Maps is no longer the tool that we once used to go from point A to point B; it has become much more.

This tool, one of Google’s most widely used apps, is being improved with more and more services to provide users with a personalized experience on their routes (whether regular or not). Depending on our position, we will:

  • Receive suggestions regarding establishments where we can shop.
  • Request public and private services: for example, taxis.
  • Ask the authorities for assistance: police, fire brigade, ambulance…

What does the Google Maps Platform include?

Beyond its well-known app for computers and intelligent devices (smartphones and tablets), the Google Maps platform contains 18 APIs to enable businesses and public agencies to develop their own localization strategies and interact with their users. The Google Maps Platform brings these APIs together in three large groups:

  • Maps: APIs related to the tools mapping aspects, covering the entire world. Users can customise static and dynamic maps, as well as street-level views (Street View), and align them with the identity of each business.
  • Routes: APIs related to transport networks (roads, railways, etc.), covering more than 64 million kilometres. Thanks to information provided by users, it can generate routes based on predictive traffic models.
  • Places: the APIs grouped under this heading contain complete location data from anywhere in the world, as well as detailed information about more than 100 million sites and places of interest that can be easily located by users. They can also attract customers through reviews and even detect fraud cases.

The Google Maps Platform, the key to the digital transformation of your business

As we mentioned at the beginning of this article, both the private and public sectors can greatly benefit from the features included in the Google Maps Platform thanks to the apps and programs based on it.

Current app stores, whether for Android or iOS, feature apps ranging from well-known private taxi companies (so that we can order the nearest taxi to our position) to apps belonging to retail chains (which propose personalized offers when we are near their location).

There is, therefore, a wide-ranging offer for users. Users can download applications for almost everything today. However, what do many of them have in common? The answer is that they base their services on the use of Google Maps Platform APIs. Geolocation is becoming an important part of our day-to-day lives and businesses that want to be at the forefront of digital transformation know this.

AlertCops, the Police and Civil Guard app, is a good example of this. It is a service designed by the Ministry of the Interior to respond to the challenges of digital transformation regarding how citizens interact with Law Enforcement Agencies. AlertCops is the perfect example of how the combination of Google Maps APIs can make a difference by helping to create a geolocation-based product that meets the needs of its users.
