Ending support for the Google Talk client for Windows
Next year, Google will retire the Windows client for Google Talk. Users can continue to use Google Talk through Gmail on the web or through third-party clients. Many users are switching to Google+ Hangouts chat, which offers better support for multiple devices, group conversations, and rich content such as images and locations.
Users of the Google Talk client for Windows will start seeing notifications within the application in January, 2014.Connections from the Google Talk client to Google Talk will continue to operate for the first two months of 2014. Users may continue to see the deprecation warning in the client during this time. After this period has elapsed the client will be unable to connect to the Google Talk service.
It is not possible to prevent users of the Windows client from receiving the deprecation notification in the application. Users can continue to use Google Talk through Gmail on the web or through third-party clients. If users upgrade to the Google+ Hangouts chat service, they can use the Hangouts Google Chrome extension to chat from the desktop.
Administrators can enable the new Hangouts so that users may choose to use this service instead of Google Talk. More information is available in the support documentation.
